About the Artist
What can we say about the artist? Well most people think I have lost my mind. I think it is because I have so many new babies in my head just waiting to get out that they get in my way......but I guess we better back track a little....
I was born in North Carolina, longer ago than I am willing to admit. I grew up in Central Florida, where I live today with Michael, my husband of 30 years! We have four wonderful children, Kelly 26, Austin 24, McKara Laine, 19 and Kacey, 8...yes, you read right 8! He was quite the after thought but a very special blessing to all of our lives. Let's just say, his first car will be a handicap van to drive his dad and me around. Kelly has recently added his wonderful wife, Mary to our family. The older three are all very artistic, so watch for them in the future.
As you can see, life has always been full of children and my dolls are just an extension of my children. You will see a glimpse of each of my children in my doll’s faces.
I began sculpting dolls 14 years ago when my daughter was just five. The poor child has often been the subject in my quest to prefect portrait sculpting. I am proud to say after many questionable attempts, they finally look like her! My only formal training has come from taking seminars from a few very gifted artists in the doll industry, as well as classes from a retired orthopedic surgeon, who taught me to sculpt from the bone structure out. Even with training, most of my development as a sculptor has come from hard work and dedication to my art.
Eighteen foot windows of natural sunlight fill my studio making it a great place to sculpt and create. Being attached to the main part of my home makes it even better. I am able to still keep an eye on my little guy while I work the usual and the unusual hours of an artist.
My love is to capture the love and sweetness of children. I enjoy sculpting children from a more innocent time as if to recreate just a moment of that innocence again. This is why I love to use the old photos from a bygone era the most.
Variety polymer clay is what I choose to use because of the workability as well as its durability. I offer One of a Kind dolls in this medium as well as porcelain.
I hope they will bring you happiness.
Sincerely, Joy
